The Good Bookman: D&D Galleries
By Edith Reynolds
October 22, 2003

The Good Bookman is a regular feature profiling a bookseller in each column. The Good Bookman will reveal what our colleagues are doing in the hopes we can all learn from each other's experiences.

The following blurb is what prompted me to select the Carlsons for the Good Bookman in this issue. The Yankee Peddler, which was grossly underinsured, I am told, suffered a fire and it would take $20,000 to replace a ton of books, including all the rare items they take to ABAA Fairs:

This month The Yankee Peddler in Ontario, NY suffered fire damage when a nearby pizza parlor went up in flames. Many booksellers and collectors know the shop is owned by the Westerbergs, John, Douglas and Janet who've spent more than twenty years selling Americana - First editions - Illustrated books - Military - Aviation - Children's - Exploration/Travel - New York State History - Roycroft - General Used and Antiquarian - Prints - Paintings - Photographica - Maps - Ephemera. They are a familiar sight at book fairs, often having large booths teeming with treasures.

Most of their inventory was lost and heavily smoke damaged, including their reference library. Collections are being taken to replace this library, and if you have any that you would like to pass along, please contact the Westerbergs at 315 524 4352 or fax them at 315 524 3365. The email address is: byankeep@rochester.rr.com. They will be able to tell you what books are still needed to get them back in business.

Financial donations are being handled by David and Denise Carlson of D&D Galleries, representing the Mid Atlantic Chapter of the ABAA. Any checks may be sent to them at D & D Galleries, PO Box 8413, Somerville, NJ 08876.

This issue's Good Bookman truly deserves recognition for their generosity in helping a fellow bookseller in a time of need. David and Denise Carlson of D & D Galleries are members of MAC (Mid Atlantic Chapter of the ABAA) and are responsible for the collection of funds to aid the owners of the Yankee Peddler.
