Letters to the Editor
By Craig Stark
May 21, 2003

Dear Bookologist,

I am very critical of web sites and their less-than-useful, so-called "content." In contrast, you do a terrific job. I'm so glad I stumbled over you. I think I read about the site in one of Windwalker's books. What a great surprise and of immense use to all of us.

Bette

Editor's reply: Content is definitely the name of the game at the Bookologist, and even advertisers are targeted for pertinence to bookselling. Another complaint we frequently hear is that seemingly helpful sites begin ambitiously but then are allowed to "run" themselves. Unfortunately, fresh information soon ages into obsolescence, especially in the book market. Additions and updates will be made to the Bookologist continuously.

Dear Bookologist,

Thank you so much for the article on the Gainsville Friends of Library booksale http://tinyurl.com/c4i4. I have emailed it all over the country to friends and relatives that I'm sure never believed me! You really caught the essence of this twice-a-year happening - a great report.

Editor's reply: The final, three-day totals for this sale ended at $124,209.14. Great job, Gainesville FOL!

Dear Bookologist,

Your helpful advice just resulted in a $200.00 sale for me on eBay. In one of your columns your experiences were similar to mine - selling many books for little money with very much work involved. Also buying bestsellers thinking that they will sell. You suggested doing a search to find some hot selling books that one might not normally think of purchasing. I went to a garage sale and found two "Clair Bee" books that I remember seeing from my search on eBay. I paid $1.00 for both and sold them for about $200.00. Your advice has really helped!

Thanks again,

Madeline

Editor's reply: The Clair Bee series of sports books are indeed sleepers. Titles by other authors in the youth sports genre frequently have little or no value, so these are often overlooked. Bee, a legendary basketball coach, took up writing later in life and produced the now highly collectible Chip Hilton series. TIP: Bee's first name is often misspelled as Claire or Clare, and searches using the misspelled variants will occasionally yield bargains on eBay or fixed price sites. A brief biography of Bee can be found here: http://www.hickoksports.com/biograph/beeclair.shtml.
