Seconds sometimes matter at estate sales, especially if competing buyers are present and there are a limited number of quality books available. If you've gotten up early to get near the beginning of a line, spent an hour or more waiting, don't squander your effort in the first few moments by going to a bookcase with obviously unpromising books. Most readers group books in their collections, and the best of these groups can often be spotted from a distance. Some of the more useful ones are:
- big books
- slender books
- unevenly sized books
- books with dust jackets
- books with gilt lettering
- leather books
- book sets (other than encyclopedias)
Remember that shelves of fiction are rarely productive and can often be spotted by uniformity of size.
